    Annual Deadline - 31 May (nominations received after this date will be carried forward to the following year).
  • This form may be used for the following Awards: Council Award, Honorary Fellowship, Certificate of Merit and Branch Certificates of Appreciation. (The webpage where the form is housed will hold more information on each category of award).

    Who can nominate? 

    Nominations can come from all areas of the Institute, including from individual members as well as from Council/Trustees, standing committees, committees and branch committees. We also welcome nominations from the wider tax community - the profession, industry/commerce and the public sector. 

    Who can I nominate? 

    A member cannot nominate themselves. Current members of Council, Officers and staff are not eligible to receive awards however if you’d like to acknowledge their work please send an email to hwhiteman@ciot.org.uk 

    The Council Award, Certificate of Merit and Branch Certificate of Appreciation are presented for voluntary work linked to the charity's objects, with a particular emphasis on the the three central pillars of strategic focus: www.tax.org.uk/vision-and-values   

    • Professionalism and integrity 
    • Building public trust and confidence 
    • Educational and Ethical Standards 

    Honorary Fellowship nominations recognise the valuable contributions made to the tax world by members and non-members. These contributions may include the development or implementation of tax policies, as well as furthering the public education of tax. 

    What should I include in my nomination?

    Please set out in no more than 500 words the ways in which your nominee has fulfilled the set criteria for each Institute Award. Award Criteria 

    Is my nomination confidential?

    Yes: all nominations will be kept totally confidential and will only be seen by those involved in the judging process.

    Please do not inform the candidate that you have nominated them for an award. 

    Who will review the nominations?

    Nominations for Council Award and Honorary Fellowship will be reviewed by Council . Nominations for the Certificate of Merit will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of the Officers of the CIOT and any additional members they choose to include for diversity. 

    Branch Certificate of Appreciation nominations will be reviewed initially by Joint Branches Sub-Committee and the Chair of the Membership and Branches Committee.

  • What are we looking for?

    We are looking for nominees who have made an outstanding contribution to either the delivery of the Institute’s charitable objectives or, for Honorary Fellowship, the field of Taxation. In particular, we are looking for nominees who have: 

    • changed things (with an emphasis on practical achievement) 
    • demonstrated innovation 
    • are examples of selfless voluntary service  
    • acted professionally in a way that has brought distinction to the tax profession

    The following information will be useful to the sifting panel:

    • what has been their impact and how it supports the Institute's charitable objects either directly or indirectly
    • how wide their influence has been and nhow that has been used to promote the aims and objectives of the Institute
    • an understanding of their practical achievements

  • What happens next? 

    Following the nomination deadline of 31 May, the selection committees will meet to review all nominations and make their recommendations on selections for the annual round.

    Nominations received after 31 May will be carried over to the next annual round.

    Following the judging and voting on selections in July, the Institute will write with a letter/email to the awardee inviting them to accept the award at the Annual President's Reception or such other event as appropriate. The President's Reception typically takes place in the Autumn in central London.

    Where your nominee has been judged successful, the Institute will contact you to confirm the form of words we have drafted for the citation. 

    If you have not heard from the Institute by the end of August within the annual round you should assume that your nomination has not been taken forward.
